To further promote cloud computing innovation and development, identify outstanding industry practices, and establish pioneering benchmarks, the Cloud Computing Standards and Open Source Promotion Committee recently announced the results of its 2020 Cloud Management and Cloud Networking Outstanding Case Selection. The "China University of Geosciences Campus Cloud — Cloud CUG Platform" project, jointly developed by Cloudchef and China University of Geosciences, was selected as a 2020 Outstanding Case.

This selection attracted exceptional cases from leading service providers including Huawei, Tencent, and China Telecom, spanning sectors such as government affairs, finance, telecommunications, industrial manufacturing, aerospace, and education. After rigorous preliminary review and expert evaluation, the Cloudchef China University of Geosciences case stood out among numerous contenders and was successfully selected — notably becoming the only education sector case among all awardees.

In recent years, smart campus development has become a new trend in higher education informatization and a focal point of IT research. Cloud computing technology, as a cutting-edge technology, provides strong technical support and practical solutions for smart campus IT infrastructure. With the development of multi-cloud trends, many universities embracing cloud-native technologies have also gradually encountered challenges in multi-cloud resource management, delivery efficiency, and unified operations.

In 2020, China University of Geosciences partnered with Cloudchef to launch the "Cloud CUG Platform" solution, designed to cloudify on-campus IT resources, build cloud-native applications, create a unified entry point for multi-cloud resource requests and security governance, and achieve automated resource deployment, rapid delivery, integrated monitoring, self-healing fault recovery, and autonomous multi-cloud, multi-resource operations.

Leveraging the powerful capabilities of SmartCMP cloud management, Cloudchef provided China University of Geosciences with one-stop service management for IaaS, CaaS, PaaS, and other foundational IT resource pools. This enabled rapid construction of the Cloud CUG Platform, building university-specific SaaS services through a comprehensive solution encompassing one-stop IT service requests, service automation, data visualization, and data applications — comprehensively supporting the university's teaching, research, and administrative IT needs.

01  Hybrid Cloud Management Platform

Cloudchef SmartCMP provides unified governance of heterogeneous infrastructure at the bottom layer and integrates with the university's existing one-stop service platform at the top layer. It manages heterogeneous infrastructure including on-premises virtualization, physical bare metal devices, F5, and container cloud platforms. It provides full lifecycle resource management, process management, monitoring management, and analytics — delivering IT services to different tenants, colleges, roles, and users through a unified portal.

02  Everything IT as a Cloud Service

Cloudchef SmartCMP's service management solution designs WYSIWYG service blueprints through TOSCA, designs service and approval workflows through the BPMN process engine, and leverages custom forms to build cloud services including the university's foundational cloud platform, database services, security services, SDN, load balancing services, network services, and script tasks — all available for on-demand requests by faculty and students.

03  Self-Service and Full Lifecycle Management

Cloudchef SmartCMP provides multi-cloud heterogeneous resource management capabilities, governing the university's VMware, EasyStack, container cloud, cloud bastion host, and F5 resources. It delivers complete automated service lifecycle management for cloud resources and applications, including service design and publishing, self-service requests, request approval, automated deployment, daily operations management, and service reclamation.

04  Organization-Based Management and Processes

Cloudchef SmartCMP can map to the university's colleges, administrative departments, and affiliated units, setting service specifications, service policies, approval workflows, and role-based service management permissions according to organizational structure.

05  Open Architecture

Through SmartCMP's pluggable architecture, support for various cloud platforms can be easily added, with rapid integration of mainstream private and public clouds. This enables the university to expand to any foundational cloud platform without impacting upper-layer business applications. SmartCMP's plugin-based architecture facilitates extensible management of various cloud resources and services.

In the multi-cloud era, industries across the board are accelerating their cloud adoption. The China University of Geosciences Cloud CUG Platform project represents an initiative to comprehensively transition from on-premises IT infrastructure to cloud-based services. Through Cloudchef's hybrid and extensible SmartCMP cloud management platform, the university's IT resources are rapidly delivered as cloud services to business systems, research, and teaching — deepening the value of IT applications.

Meanwhile, the Cloud CUG management platform employs cloud-based operations and innovative self-service models to promote quality development in education. The highly automated "cloud service + cloud operations + cloud management" trinity cloud service middle platform connects IT application scenarios across education and teaching end-to-end, using resource policy tags for AI-driven automatic allocation and deployment of IT resources — reducing communication costs, improving work efficiency, and supporting teaching and research innovation.

Notably, this China University of Geosciences case marks Cloudchef's second CMP Outstanding Case award, following the previous recognition for the China Merchants Securities Cloud Service Middle Platform project. As a technology company in the cloud management space, Cloudchef has successfully empowered over 200 enterprises across finance, government, healthcare, internet, manufacturing, and other sectors with advanced cloud management concepts and outstanding product implementation capabilities.

Looking ahead, Cloudchef will continue to accelerate business innovation, refine and polish its products, drive transformation in the cloud management industry, and is committed to delivering multi-cloud management experiences in cloud-native environments for more industry customers — accelerating enterprise digital transformation.
