Another Achievement | Cloudchef's CUG Cloud Platform Project Wins "2020 CMP Outstanding Case" Award

Published: 2021-01-22

To further promote the innovative development of cloud computing, identify outstanding practices in the industry, and set benchmarks for excellence, the results of the 2020 Cloud Management and Cloud Network Outstanding Case Selection, organized by the Cloud Computing Standards and Open Source Promotion Committee, have been officially announced. The "China University of Geosciences Campus Cloud — Cloud CUG Platform" project (hereinafter referred to as the "CUG Cloud Platform"), jointly built by Cloudchef and the China University of Geosciences, stood out among 146 cloud management and cloud network cases to earn the prestigious "2020 CMP Outstanding Case" title.

This selection event brought together outstanding cases from major service providers including Huawei, Tencent, and China Telecom, covering sectors such as government, finance, telecommunications, industrial manufacturing, aerospace, and education. After rigorous initial material review and expert evaluation, the Cloudchef CUG Cloud Platform case successfully emerged from among numerous competitors, becoming the only higher education cloud management case to receive this award.

In recent years, smart campus construction has become a new trend in higher education informatization and a focal point for information technology research. As an emerging frontier technology, cloud computing provides strong technical support and practical solutions for smart campus informatization. With the development of multi-cloud trends, many universities embracing cloud-native technologies have also gradually found themselves facing management challenges including difficult multi-cloud resource control, low delivery efficiency, and high O&M complexity.

In 2020, the China University of Geosciences partnered with Cloudchef to jointly launch the "Cloud CUG Platform" solution, aimed at virtualizing on-campus IT resources, building cloud applications, creating a unified gateway for multi-cloud resource provisioning and security management, and achieving automated resource deployment, rapid delivery, integrated monitoring, automatic fault remediation, and self-service multi-cloud, multi-resource operations.

Leveraging the powerful capabilities of SmartCMP cloud management, Cloudchef provided the China University of Geosciences with one-stop service management of IaaS, CaaS, PaaS, and other foundational IT resource pools, enabling the rapid construction of the Cloud CUG Platform, building CUG-specific SaaS services, and providing comprehensive solutions including one-stop IT service requests, service self-service, data visualization, and data applications. This has enhanced the university's IT management capabilities and expanded data application scenarios, with the goal of building China's premier campus cloud.

01  Hybrid Cloud Management Platform

Cloudchef SmartCMP unifies the management of heterogeneous infrastructure at the bottom layer and connects to the university's existing one-stop service platform at the top. It manages heterogeneous infrastructure including local virtualization, physical bare metal devices, F5, and container cloud platforms. It provides full resource lifecycle management, process management, monitoring management, and analytics, delivering automated cloud services through a unified portal to different tenants, departments, roles, and users, providing efficient and convenient cloud services for faculty and students.

02  Everything IT as Cloud Services

Cloudchef SmartCMP's service management solution designs WYSIWYG service blueprints through TOSCA, and service and approval workflows through the BPMN process engine, combined with customizable forms. It has built cloud services for the university including the foundational cloud platform, database services, security services, SDN, load balancing services, network services, and script tasks — all available for on-demand application by faculty and students.

03  Self-Service Resources and Full Lifecycle Management

Cloudchef SmartCMP provides multi-cloud heterogeneous resource management capabilities, managing the university's existing VMware, EasyStack, container cloud, cloud bastion host, and F5 resources. It offers comprehensive automated service lifecycle management for cloud resources and applications, including service design and release, self-service requests, request approval, automated deployment, daily operations management, and service reclamation — achieving 360° seamless management of cloud resources.

04  Organization-Based Management and Processes

The Cloudchef SmartCMP cloud management platform can match the university's organizational structure including academic departments, administrative offices, and directly affiliated units, setting service specifications, service policies, approval workflows, roles, and user service management permissions based on the organizational hierarchy.

05  Open Architecture

Through SmartCMP's pluggable architecture, support for various cloud platforms can be easily added, rapidly connecting to various mainstream private and public clouds. This enables the university to expand to any foundational cloud platform without any impact on upper-layer business. SmartCMP uses a plugin-based architecture for conveniently extending management of various cloud resources and services.

In the multi-cloud era, industries across the board are accelerating their cloud adoption. The CUG Cloud Platform project represents an ambitious endeavor to transition comprehensively from underlying IT infrastructure to cloud services. Through Cloudchef SmartCMP's hybrid and scalable cloud management platform, the university's IT resources can be rapidly delivered as cloud services to business systems and research and teaching applications, deepening the value of IT applications.

At the same time, the Cloud CUG management platform leverages cloud operations and innovative self-service models to promote quality development in education. The highly automated "Cloud Services + Cloud O&M + Cloud Operations" trinity cloud service middle platform has created a seamless IT application scenario for education and teaching, using resource policy tags for AI-style automatic allocation and deployment of IT resources, reducing communication costs, improving work efficiency, supporting teaching and scientific research, and achieving new management, new services, new learning, and new safety education scenarios.

It is worth noting that the CUG Cloud Platform case marks Cloudchef's second consecutive CMP Outstanding Case award, following the China Merchants Securities Cloud Service Middle Platform case. As a technology company in the cloud management field, Cloudchef has successfully empowered over 200 enterprises across industries including finance, government, healthcare, internet, and manufacturing, leveraging advanced cloud management concepts and outstanding product implementation capabilities.

Looking ahead, Cloudchef will continue to stay true to its mission, accelerate business innovation, refine and polish its products, drive transformation in the cloud management industry, and deliver multi-cloud management experiences in cloud-native environments to more industry customers, accelerating their digital transformation journeys!
